Fidel Castro
Fidel Castro was the Cuban dictator who established the first western-hemisphere communist country. He did this after overthrowing the Cuban president, Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Fidel Castro would go down in history as a horrible man but in the beginning Castro was just a man who loved his country.
Fidel Castro was born August 13th, 1926 near Biran Colombia. His father Angel Castro y Argiz was a rich sugar cane farmer who was an immigrant from Spain. His father married twice and had 7 kids total. Including Raul who was a very important figure in the revolution.
He attended the School of Law of the University of Havana. In 1950 after graduating Castro began practicing law and eventually became a member of the Ortodoxos, the reformist Cuban People's Party. He was their candidate for a seat in the House until Batista cancelled the elections.
In 1947 he joined Dominican and Cuban exiles in their efforts to overthrow General Rafael Trujillo. After this he began to get more involved in Cuban riots in Bogotá, Colombia. Fidel Castro ran for the House of Representatives but the election never came due to Batista who seized power.
Castro then planned an uprising. On July 1953, he led men on an attack. Fidel Castro rose to power by promising the Cuban people he would restore the 1940 constitution and modernize it.
